Liberty Grace’s red hair and lively green eyes make her the spitting image of her older sister, Constance. But she is three inches shorter, and four years younger, with a smattering of freckles around her nose.
She dresses in a fancy ruffle-tailed black coat, and a shabby, patchwork black top hat. She wears ash-tinted spectacles in the presence of any light. Her quarterstaff is made of petrified wood, six grooves cut into it to suggest seven segments. A ring with an engraved feather pattern adorns the middle finger of her right hand.
Liberty Grace was born in Diamond Lake in 577 CY, the second child of miner Tamlin Grace and his wife Orothea. When Liberty was twelve, Tamlin perished in a cave-in in Deepspike Mine, and Balabar Smenk didn’t raise a finger to help the devastated widow or the children. Liberty’s older sister Constance went to work at the Midnight Salute, becoming popular enough to become Purple Prose’s top earner.
When Liberty was old enough to be apprenticed, she went to work in a bakery. She was thirteen when her talent for magic suddenly asserted itself. She went to Allustan for help, but the wizard explained that Liberty was a sorcerer. He trained her in spellcraft, planar lore, and arcana, but could do little to help her learn spellcasting. She continued to care for her mother, until Orothea suddenly joined the Cult of the Green Lady in the Diamond Lake Boneyard.
Following her sister’s murder, Liberty has become a full-time adventurer and moved to the Free City, where she divides her time between a modest Clerkburg apartment near Grey College, and the Crooked House. She has also begun courting Ilya Starmane.
As far back as she can remember, Liberty has lived in Constance’s shadow. She’s mistaken for her sister all the time, and has yet to make any sort of name for herself in Diamond Lake, even with her magic (which she uses so little that many people have no idea she’s a sorcerer) and her bakery (which is just her and a couple of kids from the neighborhood).
She has never approved of Constance’s career, even in the years when it was the only thing putting food on the Graces’ table. She doesn’t consider herself a prude, but she thinks that selling sex robs it of its intimacy – and in Diamond Lake, that makes her a prude. Not interested in the grimy miners that surround her, Liberty finds herself attracted to elves, but she’s too intimidated by them to take anything past a hopeless crush. Her latest fixation is Tirra, a rogue recently arrived from the Free City of Greyhawk.
Liberty blames Balabar Smenk for Deepspike Mine’s unsafe working conditions, and for failing to take care of the Grace family, driving Constance into prostitution. But she knows better than to say a word or raise a hand against the powers that be in Diamond Lake, because people disappear when they do that.
She has failed to persuade her mother to abandon the Cult of the Green Lady, but they seem to provide her with succor, and it frees her to concentrate on her magic and her business.
Liberty hates Diamond Lake, but has never considered leaving, as she feels needed in the community, especially by her sister. She’s never left it before, either.
She is also curious about her fiery bloodline, which Allustan was unable to help her research.
