Xan’s image is intentionally crafted to make him seem impressive, but also relatable to anyone. His shaggy brown hair is kept short and tidy to appear professional, yet he has a slightly unkempt beard in order to not seem too good for the common man. His clothes are extremely clean and put together, but are not gaudy or terribly expensive. He keeps a rapier on his hip for protection, but no one can remember ever seeing him have to use it.

Alexander (goes by Xan) is local to Diamond Lake, but is smallish and is kind of compulsive about cleanliness… those two things together made a life in the mines something he never wanted. What he does have are quick fingers and a very sharp mind for numbers. In his teenage years he earned a name for himself amongst the younger townspeople as a bookie of sorts, and also learned to pick a lock or a pocket if the opportunity arose. He prefers not to steal from people that would suffer for it, but he gets a huge rush from the score. Mainly he sTarted out as a young entrepreneur figuring out how he could get a piece of the action without having to break his back working and without pissing off the wrong people. He resents the controlling factions of Diamond Lake as much as the next guy… but also knows that they are the key to real money and power. He is also a very social person that knows pretty much everyone in town.

Xan’s father, Charles Quinn, was a mid level foreman in Smenk’s mining operation. Xan got his sharp intelligence and quick wit from his father, and he always wondered why he toiled away in a dead end job working for scum. His mother, Clara, also worked for Smenk in a clerk capacity… which is where Xan got his knack for accounting and finances. He also had a sister named Liza that was much younger than him. Since both parents worked so much, Xan was left with alot of time on his hands and he grew up a learning how to make a living off of the streets. Neighbors were supposed to keep an eye on Xan and his sister during the day, but they spent most of their time dealing with the young girl and left Xan to come and go as he wished.

One cold winter night when Xan was 18, he came home for dinner one evening to find his parent’s packing frantically. His sister, who was only 6 at the time, was crying in a chair by the fire. Without explanation, his father began throwing bags in Xan’s hands and directing him to start loading up their wagon. Xan never did like being ignorant of a situation and asked his father for an explanation.

“They found out about us, Xan. I don’t have time to explain. Smenk’s men will be coming for us any second! Now hurry and load the wagon!”

Xan was completely taken back. “You’ve been stealing from Smenk, Dad? Are you insane?”

“No, Xan. It’s not like…. I mean I didn’t….” Xan’s father sighed and finally gave in. “Xan we aren’t who everyone thinks we are. We’ve been working in Smenk’s operation because some very good, important people need to make sure he doesn’t find anything in this mountain. You know Smenk is a son of a bitch… but I don’t think you know exactly what kind of man he is.”

Xan stood in place, shocked. “You are spies For who!?”

“Xan, please, there is no time. We have to go.” is all he could get from his father after that.

Standing there, the world spinning around him, Xan felt something he didn’t often feel. Rage. How could his parents not tell him? How could he not have seen it? Xan felt like a complete fool, and that was not something he was used to. He panicked… and acted stupidly.

“How could you do this to us?! What the hell is wrong with you!? Why didn’t you tell me!!!!”

With tears in his eyes, Xan stormed out of the house. In an act of defiance, he disappeared into the streets and left his family in their time of need. It wasn’t until several hours later that he returned home….. and found it abandoned. The wagon was gone, and much of his family’s belongings were too. That was the last time he saw any of them.

Xan has never learned if they actually made it safely out of Diamond Lake, or if Smenk made them disappear as his father was obviously afraid of. There was no note left behind. His only hope that they are still alive is that he got a visit from Smenk himself a couple of days after the incident. It was awkward, and Smenk was not very easy to read. But the way Xan sees it, if Smenk had gotten to them, he would have had Xan killed too…. or maybe Smenk just believes that his parents never told him anything. Or, Smenk has no idea where they disappeared to and is leaving Xan alive in Diamond Lake to be a hook which will one day bring the Quinn’s back into his clutches.

Xan went on with his life.. he was grown enough by the time of the incident… and he was left a decent home to live in.

However, Xan eventually butted heads with the wrong person and found himself a resident in Cubbin’s jail for a crime that he didn’t even commit. He knew that someone paid the Sheriff off, or maybe even the Mayor… but he doesn’t know who. However, it ended up being the best thing that could happen to him. He struck up conversations with the drunk sheriff and his ‘deputies’ whenever possible, and managed to impress them with his knowledge of numbers. Before long, Xan was handling the books for the Sheriff’s under the table operations and finding clever ways to increase profits as well as hide the money trails. Over time, he was so deep into the illegal operations that the Sheriff almost didn’t release Xan when his time was served. In the end, Cubbin was reminded that Xan knew enough about his skimming to end his career, but that Xan was also still too useful to silence permanently. They worked out a nice arrangement that has worked relatively well for a few years now.

Since then, Xan still manages the books for some of the illegal activities by the local government. He has also become known in certain circles as someone that can safely hold valuables safely and discreetly. When people want something protected that is publicly known, they go to Tidwoad’s. When they have something they need kept secure for a short time that they want no one to know about, they go to Xan.

Xan’s current reputation with the townspeople is that he is protected and given special privilege by the local government, but few know why exactly. But he isn’t seen as just one of Mayor Neff’s lackeys either. Xan has a reputation of being on his own team. People don’t exactly trust him, but most people like him because of his confident and friendly personality.
